Tibetan villagers from 14 villages were forcefully relocated this month.
Chinese authorities forcefully relocated up to 1744 Tibetan villagers among 338 households from 14 villages in the Palsho county in eastern Tibet on 7 October 2020, according to Tibet Watch, Free Tibet’s research partner.
They were relocated to newly built buildings in Chamdo in eastern Tibet.
The specific reasoning behind this recent relocation remains unclear, however relocations have often been done in the name of poverty alleviation scheme. In fact, Tibet Watch reports that relocations by the Palsho County authorities took place in the name of poverty alleviation already in 2016. They were moved to 16 newly constructed relocation sites.
Mass relocations of Tibetans by Chinese authorities have become an on-going trend, which has intensified in the past few years. Free Tibet has already reported on several, including one earlier this year in June, one in July 2019 and August 2019 as well as the collective mass forceful relocations of around 400 Tibetan families between 2018 and 2019.
