The meeting between the Dalai Lama and representatives of the “Central Tibetan Administration” (CTA) and visiting American official Uzra Zeya was denounced as an effort to “interfere” in China’s “internal affairs” by China on Monday.
The Dalai Lama, who arrived in Delhi on Saturday, said that Tibetans did not desire “independence” and that he was ready to negotiations with the Chinese government, who he claimed had sent feelers to him, before their meeting with Ms. Zeya.
As part of a week-long visit to India and Bangladesh, Ms. Zeya, who is the U.S. Under Secretary for civilian security, democracy, and human rights as well as the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, met the Tibetan leader and the representatives of the Dharmshala-based CTA on Sunday evening. She has appointments with officials and members of civil society in both countries’ capitals.
